General Health & Vitality
Most horse feeds will be deficient in some essential vitamins and minerals due to:
  • Nutrient breakdown once forages or grains are harvested.
  • Depletion over time in storage.
  • Re-actions with other minerals causing vitamin breakdown.
These nutrients are essential for day to day bodily functions so horses require a ready supply for normal growth and optimum health.

Poor Appetite
Performance horses are exposed to a variety of stress factors including stabling, travelling, hard training and high grain/low roughage diets which can lead to a loss of appetite, body condition and athletic performance.

Blood Building Supplements
Stress - worms - excess sweating - hard exercise; all increase the horse's demand for iron. Inadequate intake may result in anaemia with the following symptoms:
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced stamina
  • Poor performance.
There are times during a horse's athletic career where a short term "blood booster" may be necessary for extra energy, stamina and endurance and all horses in regular training may benefit from regular supplementation with iron and cofactors.

Bone Building Supplements
Growth abnormalities, bone and joint weaknesses and shin soreness can result from inadequate calcium intake in young and growing horses. 10% of horses in training have broken away feet. Scientific studies have shown that Biotin, fed in conjunction with calcium promotes hoof wall and sole growth and strengthens weak shelly hooves.

Calcium imbalances are also a real risk for horses fed on tropical pastures and hay derived from these pasture.

Muscle Strength and Stamina
During intense training and hard exercise harmful "free radicals" can build up in the muscle and tissue cells causing damage and affecting muscle strength and power. Exercising muscles undergo complex chemical reactions to produce energy and stamina. Enhanced intake of key nutrients involved in the intracellular energy process has been shown to assist in performance.

Nervous Horses
Behavioural and nervous problems represent one of the most common problems in training, transporting and competing horses.

Exercise & Stress Recovery
During exercise, lactic acid and free radicals build up in the muscles, and if not neutralised and removed can lead to cramping, stiffness, fatigue and slow recovery. Lactic acid build-up is also one of the factors which contributes to "tying-up" syndrome.

Dehydration / Electrolytes
During training all horses lose essential body electrolytes through sweating. Extensive studies by Vetsearch combined with University trials have proven conclusively that one electrolyte mixture is not suitable for all horses in all exercise situations. Vetsearch provides two electrolyte replacers - Stressalyte and Humidimix to provide optimum replenishment of electrolyte losses.

Sometimes you can't wait until the next feed and immediate rehydration is required. Vetsearch also has a complete range of supplements suitable for immediate electrolyte replenishment.

Anti-Oxidants
"Free Radicals" are chemical compounds that occur naturally in the body but on reaching toxic levels, damage healthy cells, affect muscle function, reduce fertility and immunity and generally lower performance. Anti-oxidants de-toxify and neutralise Free Radicals - their routine use in performance horses represents a great leap forward in avoiding muscle cell damage and improving general health.

Founder Prevention
Laminitis is the second biggest killer of horses after colic. A breakthrough in Australian technology means that you can now protect your horse against this crippling disease.

Stable Care
In and around the stable it's always handy to have a range of products on hand to treat conditions as they arise. Vetsearch provides a complete range for the stable.

Sprains, Strains & General Injuries
Horses, being the athletes that they are, are bound at some stage in their lives to over exert themselves and suffer from a strain, sprain or general injury. Vetsearch has a range of 'essentials' to keep on hand in the stable to minimise the damage once it has occurred.

Veterinary
These products may only be prescribed by veterinary surgeons.

NutriSearch Free Dietary Analysis Service
Still not sure which supplement you need? NutriSearch, your horse’s personal nutritionist, can help.

NutriSearch is our scientifically based, computerised dietary analysis program and makes it easy for you to assess your horse’s specific nutritional deficiencies. It makes recommendations about which supplements your horse will benefit from according to feeding, specific problems and discipline.

Don’t mix vitamin supplements directly into warm feeds (eg bran mashes, hot boiled barley) until they have cooled to room temperature as the heat may affect the vitamin strength.
