In 1995 he was offered a position at a training stable in Germany where he spent the next six years working, competing and training at various studs and competition stables. Since returning to Australia, his stud has produced horses which have helped him to achieve a great deal of success in the competition arena, as well as inclusions in elite squads. In 2005 Shane successfully competed in the World Young Horse Championships on one of his own stallions.

She made the Australian ‘A Squad’ for a short period, also running an agistment centre, working racehorses, and assisting with a horse transport business. Why is nutrition so important and how can NutriSearch help you?

My horse looks healthy, so what can I gain from looking more closely at my horse’s nutrition?

The major components of any feeding regime are water, energy, fibre, protein, minerals and vitamins. A significant imbalance in any one of these areas can affect the health and performance of a horse. Of course no two horses are the same. Training and performance requires the body to work harder, leading to more maintenance and repair. The components that are required for this maintenance and repair must be met from diet. The diets of most stabled horses will be deficient in some areas. By entering your feeding regime into the powerful NutriSearch calculator, it can tell you the areas of nutrition that are out of balance, even if you are feeding a complete feed.

I am feeding a complete feed that claims to have all the daily vitamins, minerals and electrolytes my horse requires, so why would I need to consider adding extra supplements?

Vitamins and minerals are very interactive with each other and can deteriorate with exposure to light, air and moisture. Some combinations act synergistically (such as vitamin E and selenium), whilst others impact negatively on each other (such as vitamin E and iron). The concentration and balance of vitamins and minerals also has a direct impact on their effectiveness. That’s why Vetsearch has put so much scientific research into the development of their products. Many complete feeds and supplements haven’t considered these factors so your horse may not be receiving the benefits you expect. Complete feeds can’t be tailored to an individual, and expecting one type of feed or supplement to suit all situations is unrealistic. Adding supplements gives you complete control, and the ability to tailor nutrition to your horse’s needs. Supplementing where the diet lacks can give a competitive horse, and its rider, the edge.

I have experienced constant, niggling issues which always seem to be slowing down my horse’s progression in training?

Imbalances in any area of your horse’s nutrition can lead to sub-optimal performance. For example, if your horse is on a high grain diet, it could be suffering from low grade laminitis, and whilst it may not show outward signs it could be affecting how well your horse strides out. It could even be holding itself in an unfavourable way to prevent low level pain. A horse placed in a stressful situation, such as a demanding exercise routine, may have developed a gastric ulcer. This is not always outwardly obvious, but may mean the horse is not feeling its best, or it might be cranky which could be mistaken for a deficiency in its temperament. Take a closer look at your horse’s nutrition so you can rule out any potential problems in this area.
